ASD Centre at Llanidloes High School

The North Powys ASD Resource Centre

Aspergers - Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

ASD centre

The ASD centre accepts learners from all over North Powys who have a diagnosis of Asperger’s Syndrome or High functioning Autism.

The ASD Centre’s main aim is to support adolescents with an ASD diagnosis during the transition from Primary School to High school and then to continue the support throughout their High School life.

The ASD Centre provides these learners with a safe environment and helps them organise their school day.

In the ASD Centre we have a firm intention that their integration will work. We maintain good communication with the families and we try to be flexible and resourceful. We provide an area where the learners can pass a safe and friendly break and lunchtime. It is also a place to which they can escape when things get too much. We adapt the school day for each individual, whenever necessary, to keep his or her stress levels down.

Other key strategies. We provide…

• A transition timetable
• A transition booklet
• Observation in the Primary School
• Additional visits to the High School
• Observation books
• Support in lessons whenever necessary
• Social skills and Social Use of Language Program
• The possibility of completing homework in school
• Home School Books or e-mail contacts with parents
• A link between teachers and learners
• Individual Education Plans and Positive Handling
• Outreach to other schools in the catchment area
• Provide advice and training

The centre is staffed by a specialist teacher and learning support assistant.   It provides diagnosed ASD pupils with a dedicated base. Pupils with ASD attend nearly all their lessons and use the centre for social time and some homework support.  Currently there are 22 ASD pupils in the school including the sixth form.

Admission to the ASD centre is made through the normal school admission procedure and the Local Authority Specialist Centre Application Process.  We will assist and advise you with the Specialist Centre Application Process.

Powys Route for 2018 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay

The Queen’s Baton Relay will visit Powys this September during its 388-day journey through the Commonwealth.

The Powys route is part of the 230,000 kilometer journey to the baton’s final destination - The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia in April 2018.

The baton will spend four days in Wales, making its way through Powys on September 7 as part of a journey through every nation and territory within the commonwealth in the build up to the opening ceremony.

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communications Cllr Wynne Jones, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming the Queen’s Baton Relay to Powys once again.

“As the baton travels through the county, it’s an opportunity to celebrate our rich heritage, culture, beautiful landscapes and the Welsh language on an international stage.

“The Powys route will begin in Brecon, travel up to Rhayader for a public street event before stopping at Llanidloes high and primary schools and a private photo stop in Llandinam.

“It will then travel to the new Welsh-medium Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd in Newtown, before a final stop in the county at Welshpool.

“I hope having the Queen’s Baton in Powys will ignite pride in our county and Welsh athletes competing in the games. Plans are at an early stage but we look forward to putting on memorable activities to mark this exciting occasion.”

Chris Jenkins, Commonwealth Games Wales Chief Executive, said: “We’re extremely proud to announce this route. The Relay will give everyone a chance to be involved in an unforgettable experience.”
