Caring for pupils at Llanidloes High School

We guide and advise our young people as they develop from primary pupils to the young adults of High School. Our Pastoral Care system is designed to assist with your child’s development and consists of Form Tutors and Year Leaders who are especially trained to mentor pupils of each age group. Specialists are available, if needed, to offer extra assistance to our in-school Pastoral Teams.

When your child is first welcomed to Llanidloes High School in Year 7, he or she will be placed in one of five tutor groups. Each tutor group is allocated to one of our houses; Ceiriog, Gwyn, Hafren, Idloes, Dulas and Trannon. The Houses compete in the School Eisteddfod and Sports Day. Your child’s welfare will be, in the first place, the responsibility of the form tutor, whom children meet daily at registration.

Pupils develop a close relationship with their tutors. Form tutors slot into a whole school framework of Pastoral Care with special responsibilities managed by the Year Leaders, Deputy Headteacher and Headteacher.

Tutors also deliver a Personal and Social Education programme to pupils. This covers many issues, ranging from “study skills”, “health and safety”, “citizenship” to “homework policy” and behaviour management topics such as “bullying”. We focus throughout on providing pupils with the necessary skills to develop both social and academic potential.

Democratically elected members of all year groups will be allowed to represent the views of their Year group in the School Council meetings which are held throughout the year. This is an important opportunity to participate in making suggestions to make school improvements.

Pupils are offered the chance to participate in caring and charitable activities including in Year 7 Readathon (sponsored book read). Money is also raised to sponsor children’s education in Kenya and Uganda and a direct link has been established with Mwamba High School to which we send soccer boots, second-hand texts and novels.

Powys Route for 2018 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay

The Queen’s Baton Relay will visit Powys this September during its 388-day journey through the Commonwealth.

The Powys route is part of the 230,000 kilometer journey to the baton’s final destination - The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia in April 2018.

The baton will spend four days in Wales, making its way through Powys on September 7 as part of a journey through every nation and territory within the commonwealth in the build up to the opening ceremony.

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communications Cllr Wynne Jones, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming the Queen’s Baton Relay to Powys once again.

“As the baton travels through the county, it’s an opportunity to celebrate our rich heritage, culture, beautiful landscapes and the Welsh language on an international stage.

“The Powys route will begin in Brecon, travel up to Rhayader for a public street event before stopping at Llanidloes high and primary schools and a private photo stop in Llandinam.

“It will then travel to the new Welsh-medium Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd in Newtown, before a final stop in the county at Welshpool.

“I hope having the Queen’s Baton in Powys will ignite pride in our county and Welsh athletes competing in the games. Plans are at an early stage but we look forward to putting on memorable activities to mark this exciting occasion.”

Chris Jenkins, Commonwealth Games Wales Chief Executive, said: “We’re extremely proud to announce this route. The Relay will give everyone a chance to be involved in an unforgettable experience.”
