Drama at Llanidloes High School

The Drama department at Llanidloes High School is always busy and there is plenty of opportunity for the pupils.

There is a School Production every year where pupils can audition for main parts and be involved with the chorus. Last year we staged Blood Brothers a very successful adaptation of Willy Russell’s play. Pupils worked together to perform for 3 nights to full audiences. This year the pupils performed another successful production of Charles Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ where both pupils and staff took part, along with brass bands and school choirs. The enthusiasm and efforts of the pupils involved was outstanding, producing strong and energetic performances.

If you would rather not be in the spotlight there is plenty of action behind the scenes! We need stage hands, a technical team involving lights and sound, scenery and prop building and finally costume!

A Drama club open to all pupils takes place in E3 every Thursday lunchtime at 1:15pm. It is run by the sixth form Drama pupils and has a wide variety of members. They experiment with a variety of techniques and Drama games to build confidence and make friends.

There is also the Drama sketch competition for the Eisteddfod, involving improvisation and extracts from various plays; competitions are held in the classroom and successful entries are put forward to compete with other finalists on stage. There is also an award for ‘The Most Promising Actor and Actress’ awarded every year to the pupils who have improved as performers. This year our winners were:

There is a great amount of success to be gained from the extra curricular opportunities for Drama. The pupils love to perform and are proud of what they have achieved together – so get involved!

Powys Route for 2018 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay

The Queen’s Baton Relay will visit Powys this September during its 388-day journey through the Commonwealth.

The Powys route is part of the 230,000 kilometer journey to the baton’s final destination - The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia in April 2018.

The baton will spend four days in Wales, making its way through Powys on September 7 as part of a journey through every nation and territory within the commonwealth in the build up to the opening ceremony.

Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Communications Cllr Wynne Jones, said: “We are delighted to be welcoming the Queen’s Baton Relay to Powys once again.

“As the baton travels through the county, it’s an opportunity to celebrate our rich heritage, culture, beautiful landscapes and the Welsh language on an international stage.

“The Powys route will begin in Brecon, travel up to Rhayader for a public street event before stopping at Llanidloes high and primary schools and a private photo stop in Llandinam.

“It will then travel to the new Welsh-medium Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd in Newtown, before a final stop in the county at Welshpool.

“I hope having the Queen’s Baton in Powys will ignite pride in our county and Welsh athletes competing in the games. Plans are at an early stage but we look forward to putting on memorable activities to mark this exciting occasion.”

Chris Jenkins, Commonwealth Games Wales Chief Executive, said: “We’re extremely proud to announce this route. The Relay will give everyone a chance to be involved in an unforgettable experience.”
